- The final WSL fixtures of 2024 take place this weekend
- Chelsea are top of the table while Crystal Palace and Leicester sit bottom
- Liverpool host Arsenal while West Ham travel to face Aston Villa
The final Women’s Super League (WSL) gameweek of 2024 is here and clubs will be desperate to end the year on a positive note.
Chelsea are currently leading the way at the top of the table, but the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are not too far behind. At the other end, Leicester City and Crystal Palace are bottom on the same number of points, but there’s at least five other clubs at risk of being dragged into the battle with one or two bad results.
Some big games are set to take place this weekend, including Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to a high flying Brighton. Aston Villa host West Ham at Villa Park, while Liverpool will also be in action against Arsenal.
So, for the final time this year, we have predicted the results of every WSL game this weekend…
Leicester City vs Chelsea
It’s a tough end to the year for Amandine Miquel’s Leicester City side as they host league leaders Chelsea at the King Power Stadium. The London club have won all nine of their fixtures so far, therefore it is difficult to predict anything other than a Chelsea win this weekend.
The Foxes are currently joint bottom of the standings with just five points to their name and they have won just one WSL game all season. Sonia Bompastor’s side should win this quite comfortably.
Prediction: Leicester City 0-5 Chelsea
Brighton vs Tottenham Hotspur
This game is much tougher to call but, that being said, Brighton are in good form at the moment. Although they were beaten by Chelsea last time out in the league, they caused the champions all sorts of problems and looked like they could mount an astonishing comeback at one stage.
Tottenham, on the other hand, are sixth in the standings and have won just three of their nine games. They did clinch a narrow win over Everton last time out, so will be full of confidence on Saturday evening.
Given Brighton have made a habit of beating the teams outside of the traditional top four this season, they should have enough to get over the line this time around to end the year on a strong note.
Prediction: Brighton 3-2 Tottenham
Everton vs Manchester City
Everton have looked tough to break down at times as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United all struggled to score against them. However, they are scoring very little themselves and only Leicester City have found the back of the net less than Brian Sorensen’s side in the opening nine games.
While Manchester City do have Champions League matches to consider, including one next week away at Barcelona, they have strong enough depth to get through this run of games unscathed. It may not be as big of a win as some would expect, but City will claim all three points at Walton Hall Park.
Prediction: Everton 0-2 Manchester City
Aston Villa vs West Ham
This is an absolute must-win for both teams as they look to move further away from the relegation place. They are just one point off bottom as things stand.
Aston Villa were comfortably beaten by Arsenal last time out, while West Ham came from behind to secure a big win against Crystal Palace. Rehanne Skinner’s side will certainly be full of confidence ahead of Sunday’s meeting at Villa Park, and the hosts have recorded just one home win in the league this season.
It will be a pretty even game for that reason, but Villa may have just enough to clinch it with the backing of their home support.
Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
Crystal Palace vs Manchester United
After last week’s agonising defeat against West Ham, it may be too big of an ask for Crystal Palace to bounce back against Manchester United. Marc Skinner’s side aren’t necessarily in scintillating form this season, but they are ultimately getting the results they need.
Palace have struggled massively against the top teams this term with heavy losses against Chelsea and City. Unfortunately, United at home will likely be no different and they’ll have to dust themselves off and go again in the new year.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-5 Manchester United
Liverpool vs Arsenal
After such a positive 2023/24 campaign, it’s been a disappointing start to the new season for Liverpool. Although they sit seventh in the table, the Reds are just four points clear of bottom and risk being dragged into an unwanted relegation battle if they cannot start picking up results.
Given the way last week’s defeat to United panned out, Arsenal pose an equal amount of threat and have been in outstanding form since Renee Slegers took charge as interim manager in October. It’s difficult to see Liverpool getting anything out of this game as they look a shadow of the team that caused all the top sides problems last term.
